From the 21st to the 23rd of June 2022, Sarajevo Regional Development Agency (SERDA) from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was the host of the 3rd International Meeting of the FUTHURE project in Sarajevo.
SERDA – Sarajevo Economic Region Development Agency was established in 2001 to overcome many social problems that Bosnia and Herzegovina faced in the post-war period. The Local Communities, with the support of the International Community, launched an initiative to recover and stimulate economic development. SERDA is essentially a non-profit organization that is funded by the public, private and non-governmental sector to contribute to overall economic development.
The event was held in a hybrid format, reaching a total number of 48 attendees (25 local + 23 international participants).
In the first part of the day, a session was addressed on the project’s progress and the next steps (Mr. Evangelista Leuzzi) and the introduction of the Charter – Dignity and Freedoms (Ms. Ajla Isović).
The second session continued with a series of case studies and good practices on:
- Encouragement and affirmation of the protection of human rights and freedoms through activities of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH - Mrs. Saliha Đuderija, Minister’s Assistant of Human Rights and Refugees;
- Strengthening peace initiatives and activities in BiH - Mrs. Snježana Ivandić Ninković, Programme Manager for Network for Building Peace;
- Freedom and human dignity – helping citizens - Mr. Emir Prcanović, Executive director of Your Rights Association;
- Strengthening the capacity of the judiciary and human rights protection mechanism: Mission of OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe)- Mrs. Nina Šeremet, National Legal Officer;
- Protection of human rights and EU integration in BiH: Initiative for Monitoring the European Integrations of BiH - Mr. Edo Kanlić, Programme Coordinator;
- Recommendations and guidelines for improving dignity and freedom in communities - Mr. Fuad Avdagić, Project Coordinator;
In order to acquire new knowledge on war conflicts, justice, peace, and reconciliation, and to get better acquainted with the topic of “Dignity and Freedom (no more crimes against humanity)”, the partners from Italy (Fattoria Pugliese Diffusa APS), Romania (Asociatia Nameless Art), Sweden (Africa-European Development Agency), and Portugal (Check-IN Association) together with Bosnia and Herzegovina (SERDA) visited the ICTY: International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia Information Centre. This visit was very important because it represents the steps that were done for truth and justice. It presents the work done by ICTY and its contribution to international justice, establishing facts about crimes, providing evidence, and bringing to justice the responsible for grave violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former Yugoslavia since 1991. Thus, contributing to the restoration and PEACE establishment.
To maintain peace, we all have to protect human rights and freedoms.
The aim of the meeting was to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of respect for human rights, and in particular about the dignity and freedom of each individual and their current challenges. The meeting also showed how sustainable and well-supported human rights programs in BiH can positively address issues in the fight against inhumanity and inequality and thus ensure sustainable progress of human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in the world.
Result of this meeting was to inform and educate the domestic and international public about the processes within the European integration of our country. Therefore, the opportunity for discussion with the participants in this project is important in order to bring the situation in BiH closer to people from the EU interested in human rights.
It is hoped that through work and activism, we all will advocate reforms aimed at respecting and protecting all human rights.
